Book Worm Wannabe

I'm embarrassed to admit the following:

I am not a reader.

You know the Twilight books? I just heard about them a couple of months ago.

Harry Potter? Never got past #3.

The Work and the Glory? Volume one is sitting on the shelf under a pile of dust.

I don't know why I have never been one to read a lot because I really do love getting lost in a good book.

Maybe because I feel guilty when I sit around reading.

The old angel on one shoulder, devil on the other shoulder routine.
Angel: "You really should be folding laundry..."

Devil: "I will right after this chapter..."

Angel: "Get up and make your children some lunch..."

Devil: "They'll live.."

It happens every time.
I get hooked on the book and other things get neglected.
I can't be trusted to read responsibly.

Several weeks ago I turned over a new leaf, took up responsible reading.
Limiting it to free time only. I have managed to finish three books with the time I spend waiting in the car or at night after everyone is tucked in bed.

Reading has been fun and for the most part, guilt free.

Now I am in need of book suggestions. I know that many of you are avid readers and I want to be like you. Please send any recommendations my way, I'm open to most anything.

Thank you for your help and happy page turning.

Sincerely yours,
Kimberly, the book-worm wannabee.

Hi Kimberly! I LOVE reading books, responsibly =). What books have you read recently that you enjoyed? What types of books are your favorite? and I'd be more than happy to recommend some. (e.g. mystery, historical fiction, children, young adult, adventure, princess, magic??)

I too am an irresponsible reader...neglecting my home and family when my nose is stuck in a book. It's all or nothing. I admire the fact that you now have the will to put it down when needed. Help me! :)

I love to read, but it takes me forever to read a book. I only read at night before bedtime. I also feel guilt when I read too much during the day....plus who has time? But I can recommend a good book. It's called "Fire of the Covenant." I'll never forget it. A very good read. Good luck!

I got to your blog from jenny's, hope that's okay. My most recent rule for reading is on the eliptical only. I mostly stick to it. The book club book for the month is a quick, heart warming read. It would be fun to see you this month at book club. p.s. it's on the 18th.

I've never been into reading, especially fiction. I've never been into history either but for some reason David McCullough's books have made both reading and history enjoyable. I'm reading John Adams right now and I feel like I've stepped back in time learning about our founding fathers.

I'm one of those totally irresponsible readers. I love Jane Austen with a passion. But it's like reading a different language and hard to get into at first- just warning you. But once you immerse yourself in Pride and Prejudice you'll absolutely love it.

Don't feel bad about reading- it's just a wonderful hobby. Nothing wrong with filling your brain with words..I love reading- can't put books down. What kind of books do you like? Reading is different for everyone. An inspirational book is "The Last Lecture" a professor who had cancer and wrote this to his wife and kids. Easy reading that i love once a year is all the Anne of Green Gables books because I loved them as a kid. 1776 if you're into history. the bourne identity books are very exciting and very different from the movies so worth the read. I have never read a Nicholas Sparks book(he's next on my list) but they are supposed to be wonderful. He's the writer of the movies "The Notebook" and "a walk to remember". There's one called a bend in the road that is supposed to be great. These should keep you busy for a while :)

I think part of the fun of a good book is ignoring everything else for a day and just getting lost in it. You can tell which week is book club week by how messy my house is. I just finished the book for the month and really enjoyed it. You can borrow it if you'd like.

Thank you, thank you for all the recommendations! I have written them all down and I am very excited to dig in.

To Wylie,
I have not read enough to really have a favorite genre. If you could give some ideas for me and the twins too. (They are ten) Also, Mark loves a good mystery.

Sarah,
How can you read and do the eliptical? WOW! I would like to learn how to do that too.

Meredith,
What is the name of the book for this month?

Thanks everyone for taking the time to share your suggestions, I really appreciate it. Please keep them coming.

I agree with Meredith. The book club book this month will take you an hour and a half to read. It's called, "Small Change, The Secret Life of Penny Burford." I promise you'll like it! I even bribed Matt into reading it last night.

I have liked all of those series you mentioned you never read. Start with Twilight. It really is fun reading if you want a great "chick-flik" book. The best time I have ever had reading was on the beaches of Cancun, kids at home, and I read The Da Vinci Code. Not the same genre as Twilight but a good mystery. I don't enjoy reading those types of books before bed though. Something Work and Gloryish would be much better for sweet dreams:).

P.S. I agree that irresponsible reading is sometimes the way to go on a snowy day in front of the fireplace!

Time spent reading a good book is never time wasted! Studies show that parents who read (and let their kids see them reading) raise kids who ar more likely to love to read. Not a bad side effect... Read Gilead. It won the Pultizer Prize for literature several years ago;it is just beautiful and uplifting. It is one of my favorites!

I love to read. I really liked Twilight. I like Jane Austen. I like young adult fiction sometimes -- A Wrinkle in Time by Madeline L'Engle was one of my favorites. I also recently read a book called "The Uglies" which was very fascinating.

And I don't think I'll be starting up a blog design business anytime soon, but I'd be happy to come help you design yours just because your family. :)

Sure...here some recommendations they are all pretty light reads, making it easy to break into any genre.

Silas Marner (classic)
The Scarlet Pimpernel (classic)
Airborn (boy adventure)
Princess Academy (girl adventure)
I Heard That Song Before (murder mystery)
The Chosen (Jewish modern)
Mrs. Mike (frontier settlers)
Fablehaven (magic)
The Giver (children Newberry Award)
The City of Ember (children--movie coming soon)
Les Miserables (classic--abridged, the one translated by Charles E. Wilbour is the best)

Hope those aren't too many, I wanted to give you a lot of variety. Let me know what you've read lately that you enjoyed.
